This is the story of a son’s caregiving for a loving Mother with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It tells of his opportunity to help a gentle, joyful, and loving soul who had done more for him than anyone else on earth. During their eleven-year journey through the disease, they overcame all challenges and arrived at a peaceful end. This account covers AD and caregiving on multiple levels from multiple perspectives. The levels are represented by the various facets of the disease. The perspectives are from the caregiver, care recipient, witnesses, and the support staff. In brief, the book flows through the following topics: the decision to make the caregiver commitment; receiving the AD diagnosis and working with it; family conflict at the time of parental caregiving;; the importance of forgiveness; nursing homes; the overwhelming benefit and practice of love and laughter between caregiver and care recipient; facing the approaching death of one’s AD patient; picking up the pieces after the loss and the individual issue of mourning; reflections on lessons learned from the caregiving process; moving on; and other matters related to this particular pair of people. Caregiving provided an opportunity to act completely out of love for another person. This love was expressed in various ways and evolved to perhaps the highest form—the joyful giving and receiving of unconditional love between two friends who are devotedly committed to each other’s welfare and the well-being of humanity as a whole. When he made the decision to be his mother’s caregiver, the author had no idea how long the caregiving would last; how hard it would be; nor even the slightest clue of what family problems lay ahead. And, he had not even imagined the great spiritual dividends he would receive when all was said and done. What he did know was that it was the right thing to do.
